Home learning resources

Hello,

I am going to be pasting some links to resources in here.

Scholastic has some online learning for the next 20 days:

French stories here and here.

English stories here

English work for Google Drive:

Pick one of the following sentences and write a paragraph that 'shows' what is being described.

  • She was so sad when she lost her puppy.
  • The garden was beautiful.
  • It was a stormy night.
  • The cake was delicious.
  • It was an exciting day.
  • I have a huge secret.
  • I am on a trip around the world.
  • The phone rang, she picked it up and ...
  • Our supply teacher is very unusual
Think about painting a picture with your words ( nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs).  Think about your 5 senses, what can you see, feel, taste, hear and smell?
Describe the character's actions

Illustrate the paragraph you wrote. Make illustrations match the words in the paragraph.

Send me your work on google drive: parichardson@educbe.ca

March 13

Hello everyone. I wanted to start by saying that you and you family's health is much more important than anything school related. If you feel the need to self-isolate or if you are feeling sick - do not come to school. We miss you, but spend the time with your loved ones!

If you are looking for things to do to help keep up to date at school, here are some of the things you can be doing ( but you don't have to!):

- Use Google drive to carry on your presentation of your family/culture
- Read on Epic! (code is UCU1170)
- Research Peru.
- Practise your times tables and division. Try different strategies if you are not so confident in them, now is a good time to practise.
- Watch something educational on a steaming service like Netflix - my favourite things to watch are animal and nature documentaries. Perhaps you will learn about a really cool animal, and when you are back, you can share with the class.
- Practise your cursive
- Work on a rhyming poem with the ABCB pattern - you can share it with me on google drive. Aim for about 3 verses, but if you want to do more, that is great. Remember that poetry can be silly and fun:

A. The alligator chased his tail
B. Which hit him in the snout
C. He nibbled, gobbled, swallowed it,
B.And turned right inside-out

by Mary Macdonald

Don't forget that google doc submissions need to be sent to a different email than usual : parichardson@educbe.ca

I had planned to start our new unit on construction with different materials, but due to student absence, I will try and introduce it next week. I did not want people to come back and feel lost.
In the mean time, I would like you to start thinking about construction and building. Here are some guiding questions to think about. If you have your own questions that you have about buildings or bridges, feel free to add them to a google slide presentation and we can look at them as a class.
Try and write your questions and thoughts down, you do not need to know the answers right now. Good scientists start their work by asking questions.

- What are some of the more interesting building designs in the world?
- What makes a building or bridge interesting to you?
- Where could I find the biggest building and/or bridge in the world?
- How is it different to other buildings or bridges?
- What is it made from?
- Would it still work if it was made from different materials like glass, wood, rubber or even paper?
- If we know from rocks and minerals that diamonds are the hardest mineral, why don't we make bridges and buildings from diamonds?
- What shapes do we use when designing a building or bridge? Are some shapes better than others?
- What are some important things that bridges and buildings need?

As the current health situation stands, Spanish will not be taking place next Friday.

We started the day with some cursive practice of e, l and b.  We then watched a video called ' How do germs get inside our bodies? We saw a sneeze in slow motion and we were all pretty grossed out. We saw that washing your hands has to be done properly, covering all areas of our hands and nails and we should sing a song for about 20 seconds while doing so.

We then worked in groups to test each other on our spelling words using whiteboards. It was great to see the difference practising had made and we were able to help our classmates out with tricky words.

Words for next week:

beautiful
light
tough
laugh
across
listen
partout
un sourire
impossible
immense
tellement
l'ouest
prochain
Ils peuvent

If you would like to watch it again, it can be found here:

How Do Germs Get Inside Our Bodies?

We then learnt some more about Peru, looking at Machu Picchu and the llamas surrounding it. We learnt that the animal on the Peruvian flag is called a vicuña which was bred with llamas to create alpacas. We then started an art project where we drew our own llamas.

During snack time we read some more Greek myths and for indoor recess we watched some mr bean and then described his silly antics in French afterwards.

A message from M Trevor.

If your child is interested in practicing their dance, I have recorded Ajay doing each dance (except for M. Marshall's class, sorry!). Click on the link below to see the videos.

Please refer to communications from the school regarding the cancellation of the Monday evening performance and how we are working to share the students' hard work at home.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

March 12

We started the day finishing our math work through various stations such as playing tic-tac-toe multiplication, creating small guides explaining the equal grouping strategy for multiplication. Just before music, we read a story called 'Le prince et le chevalier'.

After music, we had a practise session for Sound Kreations. Please be aware that due to COVID-19 concerns, the performance has been cancelled. More information regarding the performance shall be provided in due course.

After PE, we had a GOTD in which we looked at how English sounded 500 years ago. It was really strange to our ears at first, but we were able to pick out Spanish, French and Latin sounding words. We looked at how spelling has shifted since then such as I replacing Y.

We then worked on a reading comprehension texts on squirrels, butterflies and hummingbirds. In the afternoon we worked on finishing our English poems and as a class we wrote an acrostic poem on the board. Those that had finished their English poems, worked on creating their own acrostic poem in French.

Just a reminder that tomorrow we will have a short quiz on the spelling words posted last Friday on blogger.

March 11

We spent the morning working on our maths looking at patterns we can use when working with our 11 and 10 times table. We then special dice that contained a second dice inside to pracist our multiplication. We played around with the fact that we can rearrange the first two numbers in an equation and it means the same thing. So 3x5 is the same as 5x3. We then divided the results to spot patterns. So :

3x5 = 15
5x3 = 15
15/ 3= 5
15/3 = 3

We started to see the pattern emerging!

After PE we had library and we finished the story of Echo and Narcissus. We started to read the trials of Heracles.

In the afternoon, we had a GOTD about the immortal jellyfish, which led us to talk about zombie starfish and wooly mammoths. We then began to share our culture presentations which were fascinating a really well done. We Lexie shared about her baptism, Penny spoke about her family origins, Hannah shared a family recipe which looks yummy, Zac spoke of his family fleeing their home country and Dalila told us about Egyptian culture. We soon realized that Ryan and Arsham use similar words in their culture to share good wishes during a holiday, and Egyptian culture incorporates some similar aspects to Ukrainian culture and how other western countries celebrate Easter by painting eggs and eating fish. Spotted these links between our cultures and languages is helping us to see how we are all unique, but share some really interesting similarities that we didn't know before.

March 10

Tomorrow we are going to library. Please pack your books in your bag so that you can exchange them tomorrow.

We had a visit from the Calgary Opera company who performed the Musicians of Bremen, based on the tale by the Brothers Grimm.

Our GOTD was " What happens when the Queen dies?" and in French we looked at why camels have humps and why do we call lions the king of the jungle?

Ask me what the following sentences mean:

We then worked on deciphering the main ideas from texts and some students completed their math assessments.

In English we worked on poetry. Having read some poems as class, we looked at the 2,4 rhyming structure. We discussed how the first and thirds lines can be almost anything we like, as long as the second and fourth lines rhymed.
The theme was : dinner. As a class we wrote the following poem. Hilarious and slightly dark...

My grandma has been online dating
And really, I can’t take any more!
See, the guy she invited to dinner,
Is a 20ft green dinosaur!

  He eats like an animal,
But he can’t even reach his plate!
 He’s really quite messy
But, she says he’s a wonderful date

The dinosaur made a strange noise,
My granny looked at me and winked,
She’d put some poison in his food,
And that’s why dinosaurs are extinct!

We then worked individually on poems and came up with some very amusing poems. One about a neighbor who is a crocodile:

The crocodile died,
And that gave me the blues,
and so that I remember him,
I turned him into shoes.
- Zac

Hannah wrote an awesome poem about her cat being a scientist:
Today it's a PD day
My cat thinks he is alone,
but when I came down for breakfast,
he was talking on the phone!

He was wearing little glasses,
a lab coat and a tie,
he spotted me in the door way,
then jumped and screamed " Oh my!"

ILater I came to the laundry room.
surprised to see a trail,
I followed it to this room,
and then I saw a tail.

I found my cat in a lab,
he was making potions,
So now I know it true and clear

My cat is a GENIUS!

9 March

We started the day briefly talking about what we did at the weekend. Madame Sandrine came by to help us write our word problems in math.

I have been looking over some of the presentations sent in- they are looking awesome.

After recess we had a dance practise session with AJ. We then had social studies where we looked at a tourism video on Peru and ask ourselves: what do I want to know?
We then coloured and stuck a flag into a book and looked at the different countries that border Peru. We also read another section of the story of Theseus.

For homework tomorrow: think of 3 things you'd like to know about Peru.

After learning about chameleons, Aidymn tried his hand at camouflage.

March 6th

We started the day by doing on our journals for the week. Please could you please ensure that all journals and red reading dossiers come back on Monday. Extra reading tracking sheets were given to all students and we have spares in the classroom.

Our GOTD was Guy Fawkes, who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. We also discussed Internal Women's Day and talked about how important it is to get more females involved in politics. In the U.K, only 1/3 of politicians are girls. We saw interviews from MPs from all walks of life who told us :  "it doesn't matter if you are a boy or a girl, rich or poor - everyone can get involved in politics, everyone has to power to make a difference. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Madame McCann came to work with us and we looked at some French texts to try and decide what the main idea was. She left very impressed by our skills!

Just before the bell, we had a session with AJ from Sound Kreations where we played some cool dance based games in gym.

Maths challenge clarification:

I had some questions regarding the Maths word puzzle on my previous blog post. I am only asking students to pick one of those challenges ( if you want to do both, you can do by all means) and the numbers were up to 30 for the first challenge and 1000 for the second.  That means that if you want the challenge of writing your puzzle entirely in French, but don't feel confident using a big number, that is absolutely fine. It was not my intention to set a daunting challenge at all. If you would prefer to use a smaller number for your puzzle like 10, that is okay!

For example: I am going to Disneyland with my family. In my family there are 10 people and we need to book hotel rooms. 2 people can sleep in each room. How many rooms will I need to book so that everyone can stay at the hotel?

10 / 2 = 5.  How many different ways can you make the number 5 using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

I am going to start putting up some spelling words that we will do a test on Fridays. Please find a link below to the spelling words to practise. You do not need to create an account, but it would make using the site easier if you wish to track scores/ improvement.

We will be sharing our ideas for our word puzzles on Monday. It doesn't not have to be completed, just some ideas of what you would like to do would be great.

                                                     Wellness presentations:

It has been great to see some people working on their presentations that they would like to share with the class. If you have made something in Google drive and you would like to me to look over it, share it with me through the app: parichardson@educbe.ca      I will put notes/comments on your presentation. Think over the weekend something about your life that you would like to share with the class.

Some ideas:
- Teach us some words from your language
- What are some interesting festivals / clothes that people wear in your culture?
- Talk to us about your religion
- Does anyone in the family have an interesting story or job that they would like to share with the class?
- Maybe your family are from another country. What was it like? What can we see or do there? How is it different to Canada?

I would like these to incorporate French, but I do not want the language to be a barrier to sharing. Please feel free to talk/present/share in English where necessary. We will begin these presentations later on in the week for those that are ready. It does not have to be very long at all.

March 5th

We started the day with music with Madame Zdrill. In English, we did stations where we had several short texts that we had to read. We then had to decide what the main theme of the text was.

  1. Can you find the theme?

  2.  A day to play
  3. Got washed away.
  4. Rain comes down,
  5. Covers town.
  6. Eyes are sad.
  7. Rain is bad!

  8. Come downstairs.
  9. Get the chairs.
  10. Blankets, sheet,
  11. Looking neat!
  12. Inside forts
  13. Instead of sports
  14. Rainy day tears
  15. Can turn into cheers.

  16.  How does the speaker feel about the beginning of the poem? How do the speaker’s feelings change?

  17. Can you find the theme?
  18. is it ....

  19. a. Persistence pays off.
  20. b. Good can come from bad.
  21. c. A cheerful attitude can overcome obstacles.
  22. d. Love conquers all.
After recess, we had Sound Kreations in PE and we then looked closer at celebrations in Ukraine, comparing them with festivals in our home life. We looked at the Pysanka egg festival and saw the worlds biggest Pysanka egg in Vegreville. We all agreed that the carol singing in Ukrainian sounded beautiful and it was wonderful to hear about different celebrations such as Eid and Ramadan and how they compare to Ukrainian traditions. We realise that one thing in common is that they are great occasions to spend time and feast with the people closest to us.

Maths challenge:

Try and write a maths puzzle using words that includes multiplication or division. Be prepared to share it with the class so that we can try and solve it together. You may wish to use Google drive to create a short presentation so that you can include some images or sentences to help us with your word puzzle.

For example:
30 people are coming to my birthday party. One cake can be divided into six slices. How many cakes do I need to order from the bakery to ensure that everyone at my party can get a slice?
 30 divided by 6 = 5

Make sure to check your answer using one of the strategies we have seen in class: la soustraction répétée, groupe égaux. Your number should be no higher than 30.

Extra difficult maths challenge :

As above, but written entirely in French. This time, the limit is 1000. Then, take the answer to your sum, and try and find as many ways as you can to reach that number using different equations. For example:

How many ways can you make 11? 10-1, 5+6, 24-13 etc...

We will share our word puzzles on Monday so that you have a few days to work on it.

P.s. There are actually 2 possible themes for the English poem.

March 4

I'd like to start modifying GOTD to incorporate students' lives and cultures. Now that we have been practising how to use Google Drive, students will be asked to prepare something they would like to share with the class based on their family's history or culture.

Some ideas:

  • Festivals
  • Celebrations
  • Religion
  • Cultural clothing
  • Languages - Could you do a short lesson to teach us some of your language?
  • Stories-  Does anyone in the family have a good story? What made your family come to Canada? ( if applicable)
  • What do people in your family do? Perhaps a family member would like to come and talk ( in English) about what they do for a living
  • Interviews - videos or podcasts (using Garageband) with people or a person in the family. These an be done in English.
The presentations themselves will be done in French where possible. If parents or family members wish to come in to facilitate or share something with the class as part of students projects, that would be wonderful, but it is not essential. If this is something that interests you, let me know via email so that we can sort out a date and time that is convenient for you.

Today we had reading buddies and Elder Randy from the Blood Tribe came into to talk to us about the importance of water and the land. He told us how the First Nations people are using their land to grow potatoes and hay. They sell their produce and invest the money into other projects on the reservation. He told us how McCain and Old Dutch have bought their potatoes in the past and they even won an award for exporting their hay to Japan.

We read the story of Phaethon, whose father Helios was the god of the sun. He rode his fathers chariot, dragging the sun across the sky but crashed it because he was unable to control the powerful horses. Zeus, in his anger, shot down the chariot with a lightening bolt.

We had reading buddies again with kindergarten and worked on our animal hearing projects. As from tomorrow, I will be teaching the students maths. We also did some cursive practice with the letters m and n. We then use these letters to spell moon, noon, moan and man.

In French, we continued to write definitions and illustrate our new words from " Où sont les ours"
Here are some of the words we found:

L'horizon, cabossés, bizarre, le paysage.

Ask me which words I picked out. Can I remember what they mean?

March 3

Today was a very busy day, we barely spent any time in the portables. Our question this morning was: "Why do crabs walk sideways?". We watched a short video and discussed the important points of the explanation and we shared some new information that we learnt. We were surprised that some crabs can travel at speeds of 20 km/h; that's faster than we can cycle. We broke down some new words and tried to explain what they mean in our own words (see below).

We then had music, followed by PE and then we went to the library to work on our science animal hearing projects.

After Math, we had reading buddies with kindergarten. We helped them learn their fruits and vegetables by playing bingo.

We finished the day reading a chapter of ' Où sont les ours ?'. We then started to go through the first 2 chapters and wrote down definitions for some new words we had come across.

Ask me what the following words mean:

Carapace ( feminine noun) : Les carapaces des aident a protéger les crustacés comme les crabes et les homards.

Repousser (Verb: to grow back):  Si le crabe perde une de ses pinces, les pinces peuvent repousser.

Trébucher (Verb: to trip up or fall over) : Si le crabe avançait tout droit, ses pattes se mêleraient, et il trébucherait.

March 2

The Pysanky eggs have arrived. Please bring a well-padded container to school tomorrow so that you may take yours home.

Madame Edgett is running a Glee Club stating this Wednesday until mid-May. It is open to all students in grades 3-5.

We started the day by reading the Principal and The Librarian from the Black Lagoon.
We then played a memory game in groups wherein students had to test their listening comprehension and memory skills to retell what students on other tables did at the weekend. We went on to watch a French video about fossils and we had a group discussion on the topics covered.

After recess we went to P.E. and learned some dance moves with AJ from Sound Kreations and then we went to the library.

In the afternoon Madame Moreau came by and we worked on division. As of Thursday, we will no longer be swapping classes for Maths.
We then worked on our travail pas fini and worked on ensuring our work was in the appropriate exercise book.

April 3, 2020

April 3, 2020 Hello Parents and Students,  With the current Pandemic and the cancellation of classes, an average of five hours per week...
